The challenge

China Harbour Engineering Co. and CCC Highway Consultants issued tenders to agents, ATH-Chevron, detailing the requirements for the supply of 5700 metres of aluminium BACO250 bridge parapet, designed and tested in accordance with BS6779.

With Varley and Gulliver’s vast product portfolio of bridge parapets, with crash-testing to BS6779, EN1317 and NCRHP350, ATH-Chevron knew they could count on the company to provide a product that would meet the requirements of the project specification.

The solution

Based on the engineers’ specification, Varley and Gulliver supplied an approved 600mm high two-rail bridge parapet, which is designed to be installed on a 900mm high concrete parapet and provide additional protection for high-sided vehicles during an impact.

Varley and Gulliver supplied 2000 posts, over 1000 rails and all associated joints and fixings for the project, which were all manufactured at the company’s UK factory.

The company’s experts also flew out to the site in Brunei to provide training to local installation companies, and to ensure that all of the products had arrived in the country safely.

The outcome

The bridge, which took three years to build, first opened in May 2018 and cost around £116 million to construct.

The scheme was reportedly designed to attract foreign investment in Brunei’s petrochemical and downstream oil and gas industries.

Stacy Willis, Sales & Estimating Manager at Varley and Gulliver, said: “Larger projects are always very demanding, with added pressures of milestone targets to achieve. The whole team at Varley and Gulliver worked tirelessly to ensure these targets were met.

“From the initial tender submission, detailed layout drawings, manufacturing and shipping, everything was completed to ensure this impressive structure could open on time.”
