LCRIG Hosted Webinar on the 8th April: The Importance of Like-for-Like Parapet Repairs

After the success of our webinar discussing the important role of passive sign supports in making roads safer, Hill & Smith Infrastructure is teaming up with The Local Council Roads Innovation Group (LCRIG) again highlighting another critical safety message: about the importance of like-for-like parapet repairs.

Why is the topic of critical importance?

According to the Specification for Highways Works (MCHW, Series 400), components used in parapet repairs must match the performance characteristics of the existing parapet.

However, an estimated 70-80% of parapets currently on the network pre-date the current BS EN 1317 European standard. These legacy systems often involve bespoke designs tailored to specific bridge structures, using materials and construction methods that may no longer be standard.

As a result, these older parapets present unique challenges in maintenance and repair and require careful consideration to ensure compliance with these requirements.

Who is the webinar for?

The webinar is highly recommended for anyone that has a responsibility or is involved in the maintenance and repair of bridge parapets.

What will you learn on the webinar?

  • Why like-for-like repairs of legacy parapets are essential.
  • Who is responsible for ensuring compliance.
  • How to achieve safe and effective repairs that align with current standards.

Who will be presenting?

The presentation will be jointly delivered by Pete Riddle – Services Development Manager and Steve Dungar – Head of Commercial. Having been involved in the installation of all BS EN 1317 tested products, as well as parapet inspection and accident damage assessment for over four decades, Pete has an invaluable insight into the repair and maintenance of legacy parapets. Steve will contribute with his in depth knowledge of various requirements and typical challenges of all stakeholders involved in projects.
