Bridge parapets, pedestrian barriers and passive sign supports all designed to keep road users safe.
Many road deaths and injuries are caused when a vehicle collides with a fixed roadside object, such as a tree, lighting column, pole or road sign. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the issue is causing a major road safety problem worldwide.
In response, passive traffic sign posts were developed to minimise the damage caused to a vehicle and its occupants in the event of a crash.
Varley and Gulliver’s HiMast passive post is recognised across the industry due to its frangible design and non-energy absorbing qualities. The anti-climb posts are classified to 50, 70,100:NE:C:R:SE:MD:0 in accordance with BS EN 12767:2019, meaning that a vehicle loses minimal speed on impact with the HiMast at a range of speeds. In a collision, non-energy absorbing posts have little effect on the speed of the vehicle and present a lower risk of injury to the vehicle occupants.
It is available in a wide range of sizes, allowing for installation along any road and provides an alternative to traditional structural steel poles that are protected by safety barriers.
Made of aluminium, the HiMast is multi-directional and can be impacted from any angle and still provide the same performance. The post is designed to shear or breakaway following a vehicle impact to minimise the harm to the vehicle’s occupants, and as an additional safety barrier is not required, it offers a significant cost saving.
In the event of a collision, HiMast can easily be replaced by unbolting the existing baseplate and bolting a new mast to the existing anchorage unit. The damaged section of HiMast can then be 100% recycled. When it reaches the end of its life, the HiMast is fully recyclable so the HiMast not only protects people, but it also helps to protect the planet too.
The HiMast is compliant with the ‘Design Manual for Roads and Bridges – CD 377 Requirements for road restraint systems.’
HiMast passive sign support is the first product in its category that has been added to the TOPAS product registration system!

Tested to BS-EN 12767 and approved to BS-EN 12899, they provide a safer alternative to traditional posts and columns.
A report published by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) more than 20 years ago on behalf of Transport for London (TfL), recommended the use of BS-EN 12767- tested passively safe signposts and lighting columns.
The use of passive sign posts and lighting columns is also strongly supported by road victims’ charity, RoadPeace, in the reduction of deaths and injuries on the roads.
