Hardstaff Barriers, a division of Hill and Smith Infrastructure Ltd, is committed to putting the spotlight on Construction careers & STEM subjects in local schools.

With the skills shortage growing in construction, as well as the challenges in recruiting young, diverse talent, it is now essential that our whole industry moves together in highlighting what an exciting and varied career construction provides.

Over the past few weeks, we have both visited and liaised with local schools, reaching over 200 students to introduce the book “When I Grow Up” which helps unite our industry in that movement. All this has been achieved thanks to a partnership with Rich Smith from Keltbray.

‘When I Grow Up’ follows twins Harry and Amy who are considering their future professions as part of their school careers day competition. The story covers a range of engineering activities and demonstrates to children that without the hard work of those in the construction industry, many other jobs would not be possible. The storybook gives an engaging introduction to the industry at a young age and helps promote STEM subjects to children who otherwise may not consider this path. It is so important that we inspire future generations now, to propel our industry forward.
