Project overview:

National Highways and Devon County Council faced significant risks to ageing footbridge structures on the A34 Three Maids Hill and A379 Exeter Bypass. To avoid costly replacements and improve safety, Hill & Smith Infrastructure partnered with HW Martin to install Rebloc RB185A H4a W1 precast concrete barriers, which provide very high containment.

The projects presented several challenges, including the need for H4a containment within confined spaces, strict nighttime working windows and geotechnical constraints, such as chalk at A34 and sand rock at A379. These were addressed through offsite manufacturing of precast barriers to reduce weather delays and accelerate installation, engineering adaptations to redesign foundations for site specific ground conditions and a modular design that enabled rapid placement similar to assembling ‘’Lego blocks.’’ Early collaboration and knowledge sharing between the two schemes streamlined delivery.

Both projects were completed within two night shifts each, reducing risk and cost by avoiding weather related delays. The solution enhanced protection for ageing bridges, extended asset life and reduced the need for future replacements. Operational excellence was achieved through precise coordination and proactive problem solving.
