The Victoria Station sections phases I.II and IIICC is the fifth section of the multi-billion pound Manchester Metrolink that MASS has been used to provide carriage and footway safety solutions.

Utilised for its ability to deliver traffic, public and worksite safety, MASS Siteguard has been strategically placed in busy, often confined, high street positions to reduce public interchange. The 1.5m long steel base units are freestanding, linking together to form not only a formidable vandal proof site guard but also wind and weather protection.

Phase 1 of the Victoria Station section has the long-term goal of reducing city traffic congestion whilst increasing tram capacity within the city from the existing 25 million yearly passenger journeys. The essential job of adding extra platforms and expanding tram track ways whilst prior moving all services from the planned routes is being carried out with minimal disruption to existing traffic routes and high street shops. Placed in high vehicle density situations be it tram, traffic, public or a mix of all three, the MASS barrier has proved to be a cost efficient method of providing recognised site safety to all sectors.

The red and white powder coated galvanised steel base units form the foundation for the different MASS interchangeable guard systems used by Gallagher throughout the Metrolink work sites. The high visibility MASS base units are mounted unfixed with no coring or drilling required. Weighing 55kg, each section can be manually positioned and easily linked together to form a safe working / public zone. Roll-on roll-off stability uses the weight of the errant vehicle to stabilise the barrier at its base should a vehicle impact occur. The vehicle is then redirected back onto the roadway away from public or work zones. This ability to provide proven and tested public safety with a product that is easily positioned yet quickly moved from site to site is a valuable resource for traffic management requirements.

All service ‘STATS’ are moved and re-located away from new tram routes prior to track laying with new routes requiring sweeping curve layouts. This has often required major sewage and infrastructure work en-route whilst public transport and high street access being necessary to keep businesses open when work is carried out. Once completed, the MASS barrier is leap-frogged to the next section.

MASS is earthed to provide additional site safety where live overhead power cables provide power to continue traffic operations.
